VIENNA, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Chilean Fernando Gonzalez, defending champ Feliciano Lopez of Spain and Englishman Tim Henman were opening-round winners Monday at the BA-CA Tennis Trophy.
Gonzalez leveled Czech Tomas Berdych 6-2, 6-2, while the lefthanded Lopez held off Austrian wild card Alexander Peya 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Lopez beat Argentine Guillermo Canas in last year's finale at Wiener Stadthalle.
The 2000 Vienna champion Henman humbled Frenchman Antony Dupuis 7-5, 6-3.
In other first-round play, Austrian qualifier Rainer Eitzinger knocked out Spaniard Nicolas Almagro 7-6 (8-6), 6-2; Ecuador's Nicolas Lapentti edged out Italian Andreas Seppi 7-5, 7-6 (8-6); and Austrian wild card Oliver Marach topped Czech Jiri Novak, the 2002 runner-up here, 6-4, 6-3.
The 2005 Vienna champion will collect $131,000. The top seeds are Argentines David Nalbandian and Gaston Gaudio.
