EAST LANSING, Mich., Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Garrett Rivas kicked a 35-yard field goal in overtime Saturday as Michigan knocked off 12th-ranked Michigan State, 34-31.
Mike Hart rushed for 218 yards and one touchdown for Michigan (3-2, 1-1 Big Ten). Chad Henne went 26-of-35 passing for 256 yards and three touchdowns.
The Wolverines were out of the rankings for the first time since 1998 after losing at Wisconsin last week.
Drew Stanton was 20-of-30 for 282 yards. He threw one touchdown pass and had one interception for the Spartans, who lost in overtime to "Big Blue" for a second straight year.
John Goss missed a pair of field goals for Michigan State (4-1, 1-1), including a 37-yard try on the opening possession of overtime. Rivas also missed one in the extra period before his game-winner.
Despite MSU's loss, the home team has won 11 of the last 14 meetings in this series.
