DETROIT, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- The Detroit Tigers Friday reached contract terms in principle with 2005 first-round draft pick Cameron Maybin.
The team said on its Web site he will receive a $2.65 million signing bonus.
Maybin, an outfielder, played several sports at T.C. Roberson High School near Asheville, N.C. He set a state record with a .662 batting average as a senior this year, adding 15 home runs and 32 stolen bases.
Baseball America rated him the second-best high school player available in this year's draft.
"He has tremendous power," said his high school coach, Tom Smith. "To watch him to take a round of batting practice, I'll tell you, it was a treat."
The Tigers said Maybin, who was the 10th overall pick in the draft, will join the team's Florida Instructional League operation at Lakeland, Fla., which begins games next week.
