Mauresmo, Henin-Hardenne advance at Open

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y., Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Former world No. 1s Amelie Mauresmo of France and Justine Henin-Hardenne of Belgium were first-round winners Tuesday at the 2005 U.S. Open.

Last year's runner-up Elena Dementieva of Russia also moved into the second round.

Mauresmo defeated Italian Roberta Vinci 6-3, 6-2, while French Open champion Henin-Hardenne beat Czech Zuzana Ondraskova 6-3, 6-0.

Mauresmo's second-round opponent will be 16-year-old Bulgarian Sesil Karatantcheva and Henin-Hardenne will battle Spaniard Maria Sanchez Lorenzo.

Mauresmo was last week's Pilot Pen Tennis runner-up to American Lindsay Davenport, who regained the No. 1 ranking Monday after losing the top spot briefly to Russian Maria Sharapova last week.

Dementieva defeated 18-year-old Forest Hills winner Lucie Safarova 7-5, 6-3.
