Dwight Gooden considered fugitive

TAMPA, Fla., Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Former major league star pitcher Dwight Gooden is considered a fugitive and "in serious trouble" for fleeing from a Tampa, Fla., police officer.

The officer pulled over the 40-year-old 1985 Cy Young winner at 2:40 a.m. Monday because his BMW was weaving in and out of his lane, police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said.

"He's in serious trouble," she said.

Gooden reportedly refused to get out of his car, then hit the gas pedal and drove away, the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times said. Tampa police observe a no-chase policy on DUIs, so officers did not pursue him.

A warrant for his arrest charges him with DUI, fleeing and eluding police and resisting arrest without violence, McElroy said.

In a 17-year career, Gooden pitched for the New York Mets, Cleveland Indians, New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Houston Astros. He was the National League Cy Young award winner in 1985.
