Atlanta sends Heatley to Ottawa

ATLANTA, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- The Atlanta Thrashers and Ottawa Senators swapped star forwards as Dany Heatley went to Ottawa in exchange for Marian Hossa and defenseman Greg de Vries.

Heatley was selected by Atlanta second overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. He has posted 80 goals and 101 assists in 190 NHL games.

Heatley's NHL tenure has been marred by tragedy. He was the driver in a one-car auto accident in September 2003 that killed Thrashers teammate Dan Snyder. Heatley pleaded guilty to several misdemeanor charges stemming from the accident and was sentenced to three years' probation in February.

"Today's transaction was set in motion when Dany requested a trade to another team due to his unique personal circumstances," a Thrashers officials said.

Heatley, 24, missed most of the 2003-04 season due to injuries from the accident, totaling 13 goals and 12 assists in only 31 games.
