MLB: Detroit 6, Boston 5

DETROIT, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- The Detroit Tigers erupted for five runs in the first inning Wednesday afternoon and held on for a 6-5 win over Boston.

In the big inning, Craig Monroe hit a two-run double and Dmitri Young, Brandon Inge and John McDonald, who had three hits, each drove in one run.

Winning pitcher Jeremy Bonderman was the beneficiary, improving to 14-9. He gave up four runs and nine hits over 6 1/3 innings with four walks and five strikeouts and broke a personal three-game losing streak.

Fernando Rodney registered his fifth save.

David Ortiz had two RBI and John Olerud added two hits, one RBI and one run scored for the Red Sox, who had a six-game winning streak broken. The Red Sox have won 14 of 16 overall.

Losing pitcher David Wells (9-6) was torched for six runs and 12 hits in four innings with no walks and three strikeouts.
