MLB: Washington 3, Toronto 0

WASHINGTON, June 24 (UPI) -- Esteban Loaiza threw six scoreless innings Friday night and doubled home two runs as the Washington Nationals topped the Toronto Blue Jays, 3-0.

Loaiza improved to 3-5, giving up seven hits and one walk with five strikeouts over six innings.

Gary Majewski, Luis Ayala and closer Chad Cordero combined to finish off Washington's fourth shutout of the season. Cordero threw a perfect ninth inning to convert his 21st straight save opportunity and 24th of the campaign.

Brad Wilkerson hit a solo homer and Junior Spivey had two hits and a run scored for the Nationals, who have won two straight and four of their last five. Washington now is a major league-best 25-9 at home.

Josh Towers dropped to 5-7 for the Blue Jays, giving up two runs on eight hits over six innings, with five strikeouts and one walk.

Vernon Wells had three of Toronto's eight hits. The Blue Jays were looking for their first three-game winning streak since late May.
