MLB: Boston 4, St. Louis 0

ST. LOUIS, June 8 (UPI) -- David Wells gave up four hits over eight innings Wednesday night as Boston blanked St. Louis, 4-0.

The start of the game was delayed close to three hours by rain.

Wells improved to 4-4 while Chris Carpenter (8-4) gave up three runs on eight hits in six innings to take the loss. Wells came into the game allowing more than a hit an inning.

David Ortiz touched Carpenter with a solo homer in the sixth and Jason Varitek doubled home two runs later in the inning. Edgar Renteria added a home run in the ninth.
