Torre, Quantrill hit with suspensions

NEW YORK, May 31 (UPI) -- New York Yankees manager Joe Torre and right-hander Paul Quantrill were suspended Tuesday for an incident in a game against Detroit on May 24.

Quantrill, who was suspended for three days, threw at the Tigers' Jason Smith in the seventh inning. It came one pitch after he was given a warning.

He apparently was retaliating for Yankees Alex Rodriguez, who hit two home runs in New York's 12-3 rout, being hit by a pitch in the top of the inning.

Torre was hit with one game, and will serve it Tuesday night, when the Yankees play at Kansas City.

The suspensions were announced by Bob Watson, baseball's vice president of on-field operations. Quantrill, who also received an undisclosed fine, is expected to appeal.
