NEW YORK, May 23 (UPI) -- The New York Yankees rallied for three runs in the eighth inning Sunday to beat the New York Mets, 5-3.

In the pivotal rally, Hideki Matsui singled in two runs and scored on a Bernie Williams double and the Mets committed two costly errors. The teams split the annual three-game Subway Series played at Shea Stadium.

The Mets wasted a dominant effort by Pedro Martinez, who had his start pushed back two days after receiving a cortisone shot for an ailing hip. He allowed just four hits and one run with one walk and six strikeouts while throwing 99 pitches.

Carl Pavano (4-2) got the win.

Mariano Rivera retired the Mets in order in the bottom of the ninth to notch his ninth save.
