NEW YORK, May 22 (UPI) -- Hideki Matsui drove in two runs and scored another Sunday when the New York Yankees got three runs in the eighth inning to beat the New York Mets, 5-3.
The Yankees took advantage of two errors in the eighth to erase a 3-1 deficit against the Met bullpen after Pedro Martinez pitched seven innings. Martinez, who had his start pushed back two days after receiving a cortisone shot for an ailing hip, gave up one run on four hits and one walk.
Two errors set the stage for Matsui's two-run hit and Bernie Williams followed with an RBI double. Mariano Rivera retired the Mets in order in the bottom of the ninth for his ninth save.
Carl Pavano (4-2) got the win as he allowed three runs on eight hits with on walk in seven innings.
