Twenty-two drivers started the "main" event after Brian Vickers won the "Nextel Open, the qualifying race for all those who had not originally made the field. Vickers edged out Mike Bliss after he sent him spinning on the final lap. He beat Bliss to the finish line by just 0.114 seconds, even though Bliss was going sideways at the time.

"He spun me out," said Bliss. "I don't like to drive that way. If that's the way he wants to drive we have 600 miles coming here next week."
