COL BKB: Texas Tech 78, UCLA 66

TUCSON, March 18 (UPI) -- Ronald Ross scored 28 points Thursday night as Texas Tech pulled away late for a 78-66 win over UCLA in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Texas Tech Coach Bobby Knight appeared in the tournament for the 27th time, equaling the all-time record of former North Carolina Coach Dean Smith.

The Red Raiders will play in the second round Saturday against Gonzaga.

Jarrius Jackson made seven of 11 shots for 17 points as Texas Tech (21-10) shot 59 percent from the field.

Dijon Thompson scored 22 points for UCLA (18-11).

Texas Tech let an early nine-point advantage get away, but the Red Raiders led by six at halftime.

With Texas Tech holding a five-point lead inside the seven-minute mark, the Raiders went on an 8-0 run to take control.
