Davenport, Roddick, Hewitt advance

MELBOURNE, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- Americans Lindsay Davenport and Andy Roddick reached the Australian Open quarterfinals Monday with straight-set victories.

Australia's Lleyton Hewitt survived a five-set battle to reach the quarters.

Highly seeded Russians Anastasia Myskina and Elena Dementieva and American Venus Williams were eliminated.

The top-seeded Davenport, winner of the tournament in 2000, defeated Karolina Sprem of Croatia 6-2, 6-2. The American has lost only one set in this year's event.

Roddick, seeded No. 2 behind Roger Federer on the men's side, beat Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany 6-3, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1. The 22-year-old Roddick hit 15 aces.

Hewitt the No. 3 seed, outlasted Spanish teenager Rafael Nadel 7-5, 3-6, 1-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 and Argentine David Nalbandian eliminated countryman Guillermo Coria 5-7, 7-5, 6-3, 6-0 to gain the quarterfinals.

Nineteenth seed Nathali Dechy of France knocked out No. 3 Myskina 6-4, 6-2 and Patty Schnyder of Switzerland ousted Dementieva, the sixth seed, 7-6 (8-6), 6-7 (4-7), 6-2. Australia's Alicia Molik dropped No. 8 Williams 7-5, 7-6 (7-3).
