Mets reportedly will get Pedro Martinez

ANAHEIM, Calif., Dec. 13 (UPI) -- Pedro Martinez, a three-time Cy Young Award winner apparently has agreed to a four-year, $56 million contract with the New York Mets.

The Boston Herald reported Monday afternoon Martinez is going to the Mets rather than return to the Boston Red Sox.

But Mets General Manager Omar Minaya refused Monday to confirm an agreement.

"We're working hard at it," Minaya said. "All things are possible."

A report says guaranteeing a fourth year in a contract for Martinez was a sticking point. The Herald reports Boston's offer was one year and $500,000 annually less that what the Mets offered.

Red Sox General Manager Theo Epstein had little comment as he departed from the annual Baseball Meetings except to say nothing is finalized yet.

Martinez, 33, was 16-9 with a 3.90 ERA last season while making $17.5 million.
