Ricky Williams may be reinstated by NFL

NEW YORK, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- Former Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams, who retired earlier this year, may be reinstated by the NFL.

In an apparent bid to return to the league, his lawyer says Williams will begin serving a four-game suspension next month for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

That would mean that Williams, 27, would be moved from the retired list to the suspended list for Miami's final four games of the season, after which his contract with the team could be reactivated.

The NFL reportedly has denied an agreement has been reached.

The Dolphins sued Williams last month for nearly $9 million in bonus money the team said he owed after abandoning his contract for retirement.

During his five-year career, the former Heisman Trophy winner rushed for 6,354 yards and 41 touchdowns.
