NEW YORK, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Anaheim Angels outfielder Vladimir Guerrero was named Most Valuable Player in the American League Tuesday.
Guerrero received 21 of 28 first-place votes and 354 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Gary Sheffield of the New York Yankees was second with 254 points.
San Francisco's Barry Bonds won the National League MVP Award Monday.
The 28-year-old Guerrero won the award in his first season as an Angel and is the second member of the franchise to be named MVP. Anaheim's Don Baylor won the award in 1979.
Guerrero batted .337, hit 39 homers and drove in 126 runs during the 2004 season.
In September, Guerrero slugged 10 homers and drove in 23 runs, leading Anaheim to the AL West title. He had a .733 slugging percentage during the month.
