Mets considering Sosa

NEW YORK, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- Now that he's the general manager of the New York Mets, Omar Minaya would like to add Sammy Sosa to his fold but others urge caution.

Nothing is imminent, a source told the New York Daily News, "but Omar is serious about pursuing this."

Sosa, the embattled Chicago Cubs outfielder, has been one of baseball's top home run hitters for years but he turns 36 on Friday and his productivity has slacked off as he apparently nears the end of his career.

He was booed at Wrigley Field last season where he batted .253 with 35 homers and slid to sixth in manager Dusty Baker's lineup.

Furthermore, Sosa has had a prickly relationship with his managers, teammates and reporters.

But, Minaya, as a scout for the Texas Rangers, discovered Sosa in the Dominican Republic and sources say he believes the slugger still has a couple of productive years in him.
