Top-seeded Ferrero pulls out in Shanghai

SHANGHAI, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Top-sseded Juan Carlos Ferrero pulled out of the Heineken Open Shanghai Monday because of wrist and knee injuries.

Ferrero, the former world No. 1 and 2003 French Open champion, has been plagued by injuries this season. His latest injuries came during a Davis Cup match against France last week.

Argentine Guillermo Canas highlighted the first-round winners as the third seed posted a 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 victory over Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

In other opening-round action, Dane Kenneth Carlsen defeated Czech Jan Hernych 7-5, 6-1, Italian Davide Sanguinetti beat Czech Bohdan Ulihrach 6-3, 6-3, and Luxembourg's Gilles Muller beat Frenchman Jean-Rene Lisnard 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
