Nalbandian, Safin reach quarterfinals

BEIJING, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- David Nalbandian and Marat Safin reached the quarterfinals but No. 2 seed Juan Carlos Ferrero was eliminated Thursday in the China Open.

The third-seeded Nalbandian, of Argentina, and Safin, of Russia, seeded fifth, each won two matches, making up for postponements caused by rain.

Nalbandian beat Dane Kristian Pless 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-3 and then ousted Yen-Hsun Lu of Taipei 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-4.

Safin beat American Alex Bogomolov Jr. 6-4, 7-5 and Chinese wild card Hao Lu 6-2, 6-2.

Kevin Kim of the United States defeated Ferrero, a former world No. 1 player, 6-4, 6-4.

Others advancing were Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand, Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia, Mikhail Youzhny of Russia, Jarkko Nieminen of Finland and Hyung-Taik Lee of Korea.

The tournament, in its inaugural year, is being played at the Beijing Tennis Administration Centre.
