Wealthy sheik spends big on U.S. horses

LEXINGTON, Ky., Sept. 14 (UPI) -- A prince from Dubai dropped $14 million for a stable of well-bred race horses from Kentucky, the Lexington Herald-Leader said Tuesday.

Sheik Mohammed bin Rasheed al-Maktoum, who also is his emirate's crown prince, bought a total 19 horses Monday and paid $3.1 million for a colt from A.P. Indy at Kentucky's Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

The colt is from a mare named Sahara Gold, who is the offspring of Breeders' Cup Sprint winner Desert Stormer.

"He's a horse that appears to have everything," said John Ferguson, who works as the prince's buyer.

"He's one of the best physicals in the sale, and he's been bred by one of the leading breeders in Kentucky and one of the best farms in Kentucky, so when you get down to it, when you're looking to buy the very best, he's a horse that has to be on your short list."
