PITTSBURGH, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Jeff Reed kicked a 42-yard field goal with seven seconds remaining Sunday to give the Pittsburgh Steelers a 24-21 victory over the Oakland Raiders.
The field goal capped a 54-yard drive that began at the Steelers' 22-yard line.
Jerome Bettis scored three touchdowns for Pittsburgh. Duce Staley ran for 91 yards in his Steelers debut.
Tommy Maddox completed 13-of-22 passes for 142 yards for Pittsburgh (1-0).
Norv Turner was making his head coaching debut for the Raiders (0-1).
Oakland quarterback Rich Gannon was 20-of-37 for 305 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
The Raiders had tied the score at 21-21 with 4:51 left when Gannon threw a 38-yard TD pass to Alvis Whitted on a 4th-and-12 play and then passed to Whitted for a two-point conversion.
