Federer, Agassi, Henman, Hrbaty advance

FLUSHING MEADOW, N.Y., Sept. 6 (UPI) -- Swiss star Roger Federer and 34-year-old American Andre Agassi advanced in the U.S. Open Monday and will meet in the quarterfinals.

Federer, the world's top-ranked player and top seed, won in a walkover when his opponent, Romanian Andrei Pavel, was unable to play because of a herniated disc in his back.

Agassi, the open winner in 1994 and 1999, defeated Sargis Sargsian 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.

Federer, 23, is shooting for his third grand slam title this year, having won the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

Britain's Tim Henman, seeded No. 5, also won. Henman led Nicolas Kiefer 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 3-0 when the German retired and was attended by his trainer.

Henman's quarterfinal opponent will be Dominik Hrbaty, who scored a 2-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-0 win over Olivier Rochus.
