Federer and Agassi reach fourth round

NEW YORK, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- World No. 1 star Roger Federer of France and two-time champion Andre Agassi were both straight-set winners Saturday at the U.S. Open.

Third-seeded Spaniard Carlos Moya lost to Belgian Olivier Rochus.

The top-seeded Federer improved to 27-2 in his last 29 matches by besting the 31st-seeded Santoro 6-0, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) in 2 hours, 3 minutes.

Federer, 23, is trying to become the first man since Mats Wilander in 1988 to capture three Grand Slam titles in one year. The Swiss already owns the Australian Open and Wimbledon crowns this season.

Federer meets Romanian Andrei Pavel in his next outing.

The 5-foot-5 Rochus dismissed the 6-foot-3 Moya 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 7-5 in 3 hours, 38 minutes.

The sixth-seeded Agassi won 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 over Czech Jiri Novak.

Agassi, an eight-time Grand Slam champion, may meet Federer in a quarterfinal.
