ATHENS, Greece, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Birgit Fischer of Germany missed out on a chance to set an all-time Olympic record Sunday.
Fischer teamed with Carolin Leonhardt to win a silver medal in the women's doubles kayak race. A gold, however, would have been Fischer's ninth, tying her with Paavo Nurmi, Larysa Latynina, Mark Spitz and Carl Lewis for most in an Olympic career.
She still holds the Olympic record for most years (24) separating first and last medals.
Germany and Hungary each won two gold medals on the last day of Olympic canoe/kayak.
Ronald Rauhe and Tim Wieskoetter of Germany captured the men's doubles kayak 500 meters.
German Andreas Dittmer, reigning world champion and a silver medal in the single canoe 1,000 on Friday, won the 500 Saturday.
Hungary's Natasa Janics beat 2000 Olympic champion Josefa Idem of Italy by nearly two seconds in the women's singles kayak 500.
Janics then teamed with Katalin Kovacs to surprise Fischer and Leonhardt.
"I am not disappointed at all," Fischer said. "These medals are more than I expected. Winning the gold and the silver medal at the age of 42, what more do you want?"
