Dodgers trade for Elmer Dessens

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired right-hander Elmer Dessens from Arizona to fill the role of set-up man played by Guillermo Mota before his trade to Florida.

"He'll be part of the "mix" that includes rookies Yhency Brazoban and Duaner Sanchez and journeyman Giovanni Carrara, said Manager Jim Tracy, who had been using a constant bullpen rotation of Mota, Dreifor, and closer Eric Gagne.

Dreifort recently underwent season-ending right knee surgery and was placed on the disabled list.

Dessens is a starter-turned-reliever and has struggled this season.

In his first 30 pitches in a game, opponents have hit .266. Over the next 30 pitches, they hit .322.

"He seems to run into a problem the third time through an order," Tracy said. "That's when balls start to get hit."

Dessens has an 8-8 record and 5.07 ERA.

The Dodgers sent recently acquired right-hander Scott Stewart to Triple-A Las Vegas.
