Defending champ Moya opens Umag with win

UMAG, Croatia, July 20 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Carlos Moya opened with a victory Tuesday at the Croatia Open in his bid for a fourth straight and fifth overall Umag title.

Moya beat Croatian wild card Roko Karanusic 6-4, 6-4.

The former world No. 1 Moya bested Italian Filippo Volandri in last year's final to secure a third straight and fourth overall title here.

Also, No. 2 Czech Jiri Novak beat Spaniard Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo 6-4, 6-2, No. 4 Volandri beat Serbian Novak Djokovic 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 and Czech Tomas Zib beat No. 3 Russian Igor Andreev 6-3, 6-4.

Three other seeds reached the second round this week, as Spaniard Alberto Martin outlasted Jerome Golmard of France 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, Argentine Guillermo Canas defeated Frenchman Olivier Patience 6-3, 6-2 and No. 7 Brazilian Flavio Saretta beatd Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka 6-3, 6-1.
