MLB: NY Yankees 5, Detroit 3

DETROIT, July 17 (UPI) -- Gary Sheffield's two-run home run snapped a fifth-inning tie Saturday and led the New York Yankees to a 5-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers.

Sheffield went 3-for-5 with three RBI for New York. Ruben Sierra added a solo home run to help the Yankees to their sixth win in seven games.

Alex Rodriguez went 3-for-4 with an RBI while Orlando Hernandez earned the win. Hernandez (2-0), making just his second start of the 2004 season since the Yankees brought him up, pitched five innings of six-hit ball. He allowed three runs while striking out six with three walks.

Mariano Rivera worked the ninth to earn his 33rd save of the season.

Eric Munson had a two-run homer for the Tigers.

Gary Knotts (5-4) got the loss, allowing four runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings. He gave up both New York homers.
