MLB: NY Yankees 5, Boston 4 (13 inn.)

NEW YORK, July 1 (UPI) -- John Flaherty drove in the winning run with a two-out single in the 13th inning Thursday night as the New York Yankees stunned Boston, 5-4.

The Yankees trailed by a run going into the bottom of the 13th, but Miguel Cairo tied it with a double and then scored on Flaherty's base hit.

New York swept the three-game series.

The game had already featured drama as Pedro Martinez tried to help the Red Sox salvage the series finale. The intensity picked up when the Yankees made costly defensive mistakes and squandered a late 3-0 lead.

New York left the bases loaded three times after the eighth inning and lost Derek Jeter in the 12th when the star shortstop ran down an inning-ending fly ball down the left field line, plummeting head-first into the stands.

Jeter emerged from the stands bloodied, suffering a lacerated chin, bruised cheek and shoulder. He went to the hospital as a precaution.

Boston took a 4-3 lead when Manny Ramirez homered to open the 13th inning.
