BEREA, Ohio, June 11 (UPI) -- The Cleveland Browns learned Thursday they will be without rookie safety Sean Jones for the entire 2004 season because of a knee injury.
Jones was injured at mini-camp Wednesday while trying to make a play during a passing drill. The injury was described as a torn ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) in his left knee.
The Cleveland Plain Dealer and Akron Beacon Journal reported that Jones was hurt while trying to intercept a pass when wide receiver Dennis Northcutt fell on the knee.
The team said on its Web site Jones has been scheduled for surgery June 22.
"I'm just going to take it day by day," Jones said. "Just work hard and rehab, and do everything I can to get back."
Jones was the Browns' second-round pick out of Georgia in the player draft in April.
Free agent veteran David Gibson has been signed to replace him. Gibson has played for Tampa Bay and Indianapolis.
