Smarty Jones has 'very good' workout

PHILADELPHIA, May 25 (UPI) -- Smarty Jones, the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner with the Belmont to go, had a "very, very good" workout Tuesday.

With exercise rider Peter van Trump in the saddle, the undefeated colt did a long gallop at Philadelphia Park in Bensalem and afterward, his trainer said, showed no signs of fatigue.

"He galloped a mile and seven-eighths very, very good," trainer John Servis said. "I got him the last mile in about 2:04. He had his neck bowed and was into it big-time. He's just happy. He's going to be anxious to work on Friday."

Smarty Jones is scheduled to work seven furlongs with jockey Stewart Elliott Friday at Philadelphia Park and is tentatively set to ship to Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., June 2.

"He's out to please, he'll give me whatever I ask him," the trainer said. "I'm very confident. I'm really happy with where he is right now."
