Davenport is 8-0 on clay this year, having defeated Amelie Mauresmo in the final of the Bausch & Lomb Championships last month.

Second-seed Ai Sugiyama of Japan, third-seeded Italian Silvia Farina Elia and No. 4 Emilie Loit of France joined Davenport in the final eight.

Sugiyama, who won at Gold Coast in January, defeated countrywoman Akiko Morigami, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2. Farina Elia also needed three sets to get by Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues, 6-0, 3-6, 6-4, while Loit had far less trouble in beating French qualifier Stephanie Cohen-Aloro, 6-1, 6-2.

Claudine Schaul of Luxembourg prevented another seed from reaching the quarters by ousting No. 5 Tina Pisnik of Slovenia, 7-5, 6-2.
