MLB: Detroit 3, Oakland 1

DETROIT, May 13 (UPI) -- Mike Maroth threw eight innings Thursday as Detroit salvaged the finale of its three-game series with Oakland, 3-1.

Unable to protect a 14-4 lead in his last start at Texas, Maroth (4-1) got a two-run homer from Ivan Rodriguez in the first inning and made it stand.

Maroth allowed one run and five hits while walking one and striking out four in his longest outing of the season. He did not win his fourth game last season until July 5.

Bobby Kielty was four for four lifetime against Maroth but was hitless in four at-bats Thursday.

With one out in the first inning, Carlos Guillen tripled off Mark Redman (2-2) and Rodriguez followed with his sixth homer to make it 2-0.
