Andretti drivers fast at Indy

INDIANAPOLIS, May 12 (UPI) -- After lurking in the background for the first three days of practice for the 88th Indianapolis 500, Andretti Green Racing hit the gas Wednesday.

Two of the four drivers for the team co-owned by former driver Michael Andretti were the fastest of the day. Tony Kanaan turned in the fastest speed so far with a lap at 222.668 miles per hour, followed by teammate Dan Wheldon's 221.953 mph. Both drivers were in Dallara/Honda combinations.

The team's other two drivers, Bryan Herta and Dario Franchitti, were 11th and 16th.

Kanaan was the first driver to crack 222 mph in the reduced horsepower 3.0-liter engines that will be used in all IRL races beginning with the May 30 Indy 500. Prior to this race, the engines had 3.5 liters of displacement.

Speeds are expected to climb through the end of the week in preparation for Saturday's Pole Day.

"It's only Wednesday," Kanaan said. "A lot of things can still happen. The number looks pretty big. We're finding our speed day by day."
