MLB: Boston 7, Kansas City 6

BOSTON, May 7 (UPI) -- Pinch-hitter Jason Varitek's two-out double in the ninth inning scored Manny Ramirez Friday night as Boston rallied past Kansas City, 7-6.

Boston defeated Kansas City for the ninth time in the last 10 meetings and improved to 9-3 at home this season. On the heels of a disappointing 2-5 road trip, the Red Sox posted one of their most exciting wins of the year.

All-Star closer Mike MacDougal (0-1) was called on to protect a 6-4 lead in the ninth and walked leadoff hitter Johnny Damon on a close 3-2 pitch. Mark Bellhorn ripped a 1-1 offering into the right field stands for his first homer since April 23 and third this season.

MacDougal regrouped to strike out David Ortiz, but Ramirez walked and Royals Manager Tony Pena opted for Scott Sullivan. Kevin Millar popped out, but Varitek -- batting for Gabe Kapler -- roped a double into the right field corner.

Juan Gonzalez played the ball gingerly and Ramirez just beat the relay throw to the plate.
