Singh goes for third straight PGA win

CHARLOTTE, N.C., May 5 (UPI) -- Vijay Singh, winner of two straight tournaments, takes on a field that includes Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson in North Carolina's Wachovia Championship.

The tournament begins Thursday at the par-72, 7,438-yard Quail Hollow Club course.

Singh is going for his fourth PGA win of 2004. The tour's leading money winner with $4,267,866 won the last two events -- the Houston Open and HP Classic of New Orleans -- both in Monday finishes necessitated by rain delays, and the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am earlier in the season.

World No. 1 Woods, winner of the Accenture Match Play championship this year, resumes play after a long layoff. Masters champion Mickelson, who has nine top 10 finishes and two victories this year, will be trying to regain the money lead from Singh. He trails him by about $330,000.

Returning to defend his Wachovia title is David Toms, who had a quadruple bogey on the 72nd hole last year and still won by two strokes over Singh, Brent Geiberger and Robert Gamez.
