MLB: NY Yankees 4, Kansas City 2

NEW YORK, May 2 (UPI) -- Mike Mussina snapped out of a funk Sunday as he retired the last 11 batters he faced to lead the New York Yankees to a 4-2 victory over Kansas City.

A 200-game winner, Mussina (2-4) had dropped his previous two decisions and entered the day as the American League leader in runs and hits allowed. He got off to a shaky start in this one, falling behind, 2-0, by the third inning.

The righthander recovered by yielding only two hits over his final four innings. He lasted seven, giving up two runs and eight hits with no walks.

Hideki Matsui had a pair of hits and scored twice for the Yankees, who have followed a four-game skid with a six-game winning streak, completing sweeps of Oakland and Kansas City.

Lefthander Jeremy Affeldt (0-3) gave up two runs in the seventh, allowing New York to grab a 4-2 lead.
