Chiefs get Welbourn from Eagles

KANSAS CITY, Mo., April 25 (UPI) -- The Kansas City Chiefs Sunday acquired guard-tackle John Welbourn from the Philadelphia Eagles for two draft picks.

The Chiefs gave up a fifth-round choice in this year's draft and a fourth-round selection in 2005.

Philadelphia traded Welbourn, who started at left guard, a day after choosing Shawn Andrews of Arkansas in the first round of the NFL draft. Eagles' Coach Andy Reid indicated that Andrews would be used at guard.

"We felt that John had the quality of play and ability that far exceeded certainly anything that we could find in the fifth round or later in this draft," said Chiefs President Carl Peterson. "He has also played offensive tackle but he's been their starting left guard for the last four years. He's a big, strong, physical guy."

The 6-foot-5, 318-pound Welbourn started 65 games for the Eagles in five seasons.

Welbourn, a native of Torrance, Calif., was an all-America tackle at the University of California in 1998.
