WASHINGTON, April 3 (UPI) -- Bobby Holik scored his second goal of the game 68 seconds into overtime Saturday as the New York Rangers defeated the Washington Capitals, 3-2.
The Rangers ended their seventh consecutive non-playoff season.
The Rangers were a mere 27-40-7-8 in a season that began with high expectations and instead saw the dismantling of a roster full of high-priced veterans and the stepping down of Glen Sather as coach. New York was just 2-7
3 in its last 12 games.
Holik's second goal came on the power play, deflecting a shot from Thomas Pock past goaltender Olaf Kolzig.
New York played without Mark Messier, who elected not to make the trip. Messier, who is second on the all-time points list (1,887) to former Edmonton and New York teammate Wayne Gretzky, left open the possibility of returning next season.
The Capitals finish their season at Pittsburgh on Sunday.
