Lewis pleads innocent to drug charges

ATLANTA, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Baltimore Ravens running back Jamal Lewis, one of the NFL's top stars, pleaded innocent to drug conspiracy charges Thursday in federal Court in Atlanta.

Lewis surrendered to the FBI, entered the plea before a U.S. magistrate and was released on bond.

"We expect that after this is presented to a jury, it will be tossed out," said Ed Garland, one of his attorneys.

A day earlier, Lewis was indicted on charges of conspiring to distribute cocaine for a childhood friend in the summer of 2000.

The 24-year-old Lewis ran for 2,066 yards in 2003, more than any other player in NFL history except Eric Dickerson, who had 2,105 nearly 20 years ago.

Lewis also set the single-game rushing record with 295 yards in a game against Cleveland.
