NHL: Detroit 4, San Jose 2

DETROIT, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- Steve Yzerman scored a pair of goals and Kirk Maltby added a goal and an assist Wednesday night to boost Detroit past San Jose, 4-2.

In Detroit's 3-2 triumph over Colorado last week, Yzerman was instrumental in the win by drawing a high-sticking penalty that led to Brett Hull's game-winning goal in overtime.

Yzerman, however, lost a tooth and required eight stitches to close a gash in his mouth.

After recuperating over the All-Star break, Yzerman was ready to go. The 38-year-old captain beat goaltender Vesa Toskala with a wrist shot from the high slot late in the second period, giving Detroit a 3-1 lead. He then deflected All-Star defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom's shot from the left point midway through the third.

It was the third multi-goal game of the season for Yzerman, who snapped an eight-game drought.
