Top seeds advance in Australian Open

MELBOURNE, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- No. 2 seed Kim Clijsters got into the Australian Open's quarterfinal Monday by beating No. 20 Silvia Farina Elia of Italy, 6-3, 6-3.

The 20-year-old Belgian next plays sixth-seeded Russian Anastasia Myskina, a 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 6-2 winner over No. 9 Chanda Rubin of the United States.

In the other women's matches, No. 22 Patty Schnyder of Switzerland dispatched No. 29 Nathalie Dechy of France, 6-2, 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinals here for the first time.

Also, No. 25 Lisa Raymond of the United States followed up her upset of Venus Williams with a 6-2, 6-0 rout of 15-year-old French wild card Tatiana Golovin.

On the men's side, third seed and French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain reached his second straight quarterfinal here with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Romanian Andrei Pavel.

Eighth seed David Nalbandian won his all-Argentine battle with a 6-4, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Guillermo Canas.

Moroccan Hicham Arazi ousted Mark Philippoussis, the 10th seed, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4.

Hewitt dispatched 17-year-old Rafael Nadal of Spain, 7-6, 7-6, 6-2, in the third round to extend his winning streak to 14 matches.
