Venus Williams out of Australian Open

MELBOURNE, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- Venus Williams was bounced from the third round of the Australian Open in straight sets by Lisa Raymond of the United States on Saturday.

Third-seeded Williams endured a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) loss to the 25th-seeded Raymond that stunned everyone at Melbourne Park, including herself.

"I'm pretty much in shock," Williams said. "I still can't believe it."

Other women to advance were Belgium's Kim Clijsters, Chanda Rubin of the United States, Silvia Farina Elia of Italy, Nathalie Dechy of France, Anastasia Myskina of Russia, Patty Schnyder of Switzerland and Tatiana Golovin of France.

Among men who advanced were Roger Federer of Switzerland, Australian Lleyton Hewitt, Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain, Romanian Andrei Pavel, David Nalbandian of Argentina, Wayne Ferreira of South Africa, Guillermo Canas, Australian Mark Philippoussis, Morocco's Hicham Arazi and defending men's champion Andre Agassi.
