NEW YORK, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- The Washington Capitals traded Czech superstar Jaromir to the New York Rangers Friday for fellow right wing Anson Carter.
The Rangers expect to have Jagr in the lineup when they visit Ottawa on Saturday.
Jagr will make $11 million this season, but the Capitals have the second-worst record in the NHL (14-27-5-2).
According to TSN in Canada, the Capitals will pick up about $20 million of the $44 million remaining on the seven-year, $77 million deal Jagr signed after being acquired from Pittsburgh prior to the 2001-02 season.
"This trade is a good one in that it moves the largest player contract in the NHL to a team that can absorb it, and it provides us with options as we seek to improve our team," Washington majority owner Ted Leonsis said.
Jagr reportedly agreed to defer $1 million a year for the balance of the contract.
