Clijsters, Venus advance in Australia

MELBOURNE, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Kim Clijsters coasted and Venus Williams had to work, but both reached the third round of the Australian Open Thursday.

The second-seeded Clijsters brushed aside Maria Elena Camerin in the second round, 6-0, 6-0, while the third-seeded Williams, playing for the first time in six months, got past Vera Douchevina, 6-4, 6-2.

Clijsters will next play Dinara Safina, who ousted No. 27 Amanda Coetzer in straight sets. Williams will have a third-round match against either Lisa Raymond or Anca Barna.

On the men's side, third-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero outfought Filippo Volandri, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5. Ferrero will next meet Joachim Johansson, who eliminated Alberto Martin.

No. 2 seed Roger Federer was in action later Thursday against Jeff Morrison.

Defending champion Andy Roddick will return to the court Friday, as will Andre Agassi.
