NHL: NY Rangers 2, Montreal 2 (OT)

MONTREAL, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- Montreal hit a pair of goalposts and failed to score on a power play in overtime Saturday in a 2-2 tie with the New York Rangers.

Alexei Kovalev scored for the Rangers with 5:06 left in regulation, setting the stage for a one-sided overtime. The Canadiens had all six shots, playing the final 98 seconds with a 4-on-3 power play.

Montreal's shot total could have been eight, but Pierre Dagenais and defenseman Sheldon Souray both hit posts.

Mike Dunham also robbed Canadiens captain Saku Koivu with a minute left, stacking his pads to deny the center from down low.

Martin Rucinsky had taken a cross-checking penalty to give Montreal its fourth power play of the night.

Dagenais and rookie Michael Ryder scored for the Canadiens, who began the day fifth in the tightly bunched East. They are 7-1-2 in their last 10 games.
