Wilkens hires two assistants

NEW YORK, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- New coach Lenny Wilkens of the New York Knicks has made two hires for his coaching staff.

He has added Mark Aguirre and Dick Helm to join Herb Williams and Michael Malone. In an interim capacity, Williams guided the team to a 120-110 victory on Wednesday night against Orlando after the firing of Don Chaney.

Wilkens took over the team on Thursday.

"I am very pleased to be able to assemble such a solid mix of coaches on my staff as we work toward bringing the Knicks back to NBA prominence," Wilkens said. "Herb and Michael will help give us a great continuity with the past, while Dick and Mark bring great experience and a different perspective to the team."

Aguirre spent the previous two seasons with the Indiana Pacers, including last season as an assistant under Thomas. He had a 13-year playing career, was named to three All-Star teams with Dallas, and won two titles with Detroit while playing with team president Isiah Thomas.
