Giants sign Tomko for one year

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Brett Tomko, who matched a career high in victories last season, signed a one-year contract Friday with the San Francisco Giants.

Financial terms of the deal, which includes a club option for 2005, were not disclosed. Tomko earned $3.3 million in 2003.

The 30-year-old Tomko was 13-9 with a 5.28 ERA in 33 games for the St. Louis Cardinals. He logged 202 2/3 innings and was 8-3 after the All-Star break.

Tomko helps bolster a rotation that has some question marks after ace Jason Schmidt underwent offseason elbow surgery and Sidney Ponson departed via free agency.

"Brett's abilities certainly deepen our 2004 rotation," Giants General Manager Brian Sabean said.
