IRVING, Texas, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- Two days after interviewing for the head coach's job at Nebraska, Mike Zimmer has signed a three-year contract extension to stay with the Dallas Cowboys.
He has been with the team since 1994, and its defensive coordinator the past four years. . Under his leadership, the Cowboys had the NFL's top-ranked defense this season. Dallas gave him a three-year extension worth reportedly $3 million, significantly more than the $500,000 annually he was making.
"I think Mike did a good job for us and I'm just happy he's staying," said Dallas Coach Bill Parcells. "I think he wants to be a pro coach."
Zimmer has not been linked to any of the NFL's five coaching vacancies, but drew interest from Nebraska, where he reportedly was offered a six-year deal worth about $1.5 million. He was the third coach to spurn the Cornhuskers, following Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Al Saunders and Arkansas Coach Houston Nutt.
